Addiction, Spirituality and Western Science Stanislav Grof, MD

Grof examines the close relation of spiritual experience to addiction. Convinced of the central importance of spiritual experience, Grof examines its close relation to addiction - both in origin and recovery - to clarify the differences with traditional forms of religion. He urges the reconciliation and integration of transpersonal experience with a modern, holistic scientific worldview: "True science and true spirituality cannot possibly be in conflict." The larger understanding developing in many fields of Western science recognizes the vital role mystical experience plays in human existence, its importance for the full life of which addictions are only incomplete distortions.
