This lecture will review current understanding of pain and how it can become chronic. The description of the biopsychosocial model of pain will be explained, so that there is a clear understanding of how all pain involves mind and body. The lecture will include a discussion of the different factors that can impact pain and pain-related disability in children. How clinicians evaluate children who come for help with chronic pain will be reviewed, as well as components of pediatric chronic pain treatment. In this context, a description of some of the complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) strategies for treating pain in children will be reviewed. |
