Lonnie Zeltzer, MD, Director, Pediatric Pain Program at UCLA Mattel Children’s Hospital, and a professor of Pediatrics, Anesthesiology, Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA This lecture will review current understanding of pain and how it can become chronic. The description of the biopsychosocial model of pain will be explained, so that there is a clear understanding of how all pain involves mind and body. The lecture will include a discussion of the different factors that can impact pain and pain-related disability in children. How clinicians evaluate children who come for help with chronic pain will be reviewed, as well as components of pediatric chronic pain treatment. In this context, a description of some of the complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) strategies for treating pain in children will be reviewed.
